The marshlands, lizard-laced heathlands, swathes of ancient pine, oak and beech forests alive with woodpeckers and red deer, and dramatic open-drift sands would be reason enough to visit this national park, the largest in the Netherlands.
The bicycles are available for free to all the visitors, which makes this place a perfect destination for one-day visit with family or friends.
One of the most impressive works of art is the statue of General De Wet, who was a general during the South African Boer Wars in the late nineteenth century.Â
The statue can be found in the Otterlose Zand area, with General looking out over the sandy plains and steppes (incidentally, he is facing in the direction of his homeland). The statue was deliberately placed here as the landscape bears a striking resemblance to that of South Africa.
Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, a hunting lodge, was inspired by an English country house. Typical features of this style include special quarters for each family member, such as the library, the smoking room, boudoirs, and the billiards room.
The Park's different landscapes are home to a wide diversity of plant and animal species. It is approximately 55 square kilometers in area, consisting of heathlands, sand dunes, and woodlands.
